Reassessing Traffic Accidents in Los Angeles - A Digital Humanities Project
Project Background: Los Angeles
The United States' road congestion has remained a source of anxiety for inhabitants, as the country with the most major automotive possession and the second most astonishing vehicle ownership per capita in the world (Capitol Tires, 2021). According to the Federal Highway Administration, there were 816 autos per thousand people in the United States in 2019, with a total population of 276 million (Federal Highway Administration, 2019).

Los Angeles is California's most populated metropolis and the United States' 2nd populous city, after only New York City. The city covers an area of 469.1 square miles (1214.9 square kilometers). The Los Angeles city area, which includes Los Angeles, Long Beach, and Anaheim, has a population of roughly 13.31 million people, with a total population of 18.7 million in the greater Los Angeles area (US Census Bureau, 2020). New York is represented by both sets of statistics. Los Angeles has evolved into one of the world's most important international megacities, with thriving industries in culture, technology, science, entertainment, global trade, and academia.

Among all of these industries, the culture and entertainment industry, which produces superb films, television shows, and music, is the most important. It also serves as the foundation for Los Angeles' global reputation and status.

In regards of the entertainment industry, Hollywood is the epicenter of Los Angeles. It takes about 40 minutes to get from downtown to Hollywood via bus. The area is becoming the worlds largest film hub since 1911, when the first film industry was established in Hollywood. With so many celebrities and well-known films, it's simple to assume that Hollywood is the founder of the global cinema business. Celebrity Avenue in Hollywood is a world-famous monument that celebrates nearly 2000 remarkable individuals from the industries of film, television, and music.

Even for education, Los Angeles is really famous all around the world. Los Angeles is home to the world-renowned California Institute of Technology, the University of California Los Angeles, and the University of Southern California. The Los Angeles Public Library, Huntington Library, and Getty Museum are notable cultural and educational institutions in addition to well-known colleges.

Los Angeles has also established a fantastic sports environment that provides opportunities in the sports industry for all forms of sports. The Los Angeles Angels are a Pacific Coast League baseball team based in Los Angeles, California. The Los Angeles Lakers, a basketball team that was founded in Minneapolis in 1947 but prospered in Los Angeles, won 16 NBA championships.Los Angeles also hosted the Olympics in 1932 and 1984.
Los Angeles, as an international metropolis, is unavoidably attracting a large number of immigrants to settle down due to its high level of development in a variety of industries. Immigrants from other countries account for 11.2 percent of the population in Los Angeles, with Chinese immigrants accounting for 7.1 percent (Sorensen, Wachs, Min, Kofner, & Ecola, 2008).

Traffic will definitely become a major concern as the city's population expands. Meanwhile, the city of Los Angeles is attempting to enhance its transportation system: despite possessing one of the world's largest interstate freeways, Los Angeles is still one of the top ten most congested cities in the United States (Ong & Miller, 2005). The major routes that interconnect Los Angeles and its outlying areas are Interstate 5, Interstate 10, and US National Highway 101. The Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority and other organizations also operate a number of bus, subway, and light rail routes. Los Angeles is served by the red and purple subway lines, as well as the gold, blue, expo, and green light rail lines. The orange and silver lines are BRT lines with stations and intervals that are similar to those of the orange and silver lines. BRT lines with light rail-style stops and frequencies are the orange and silver lines. The city's major train station is Union Station, which is located northeast of the city center and serves the Southern California Metropolis Railway. Los Angeles is connected to all of its neighboring counties as well as a huge number of suburbs via this system.
Los Angeles is the nation's second-largest metropolitan region (including surrounding areas). Los Angeles is home to roughly a third of the whole population, according to a survey (Sorensen, 2009). The Los Angeles subway, on the other hand, has a yearly passenger flow of around 48.7 million. The railway in Hong Kong carries 1.563 billion passengers every year, over 30 times that of Los Angeles, despite the fact that the city has a much smaller population than Los Angeles (De Gruyter, Currie, & Rose, 2016).
Higher traffic demand would inevitably result from a large population. Despite this, due to poor public transportation use, Los Angeles has become one of the ten most crowded cities in the United States. Following it came the inevitable traffic accidents and safety concerns.
